Recycled pallets bring festive cheer

Charity About with Friends is bringing festive cheer by upcycling wooden pallets from Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm into thoughtful gifts and decorations.

Workers from Ørsted wanted to ensure the many untreated wooden pallets arriving at the Hornsea 3 site in Oulton every day weren’t wasted. Cromer-based About With Friends, which works with young adults with learning disabilities, were on the hunt for raw timber for their woodworking sessions.

Now, both parties are happy as the pallets are transformed into hedgehog houses, bat boxes and Christmas decorations and sold to make money for About With Friends’ work.

Two people in a workshop with one person holding a drill while the other holds the wood joint in place.

“Hornsea 3 promised us as many pallets as we could break down but I don’t think we quite believed it until one afternoon a van with 50 pallets turned up!” said Elliot Large from About With Friends “We’re always looking to upcycle to keep costs down.”

Luke Bridgman, Managing Director, Hornsea 3, said: “One of our team found this great opportunity to recycle our old pallets and support About with Friends and we were all for it. We aim to be the world’s most sustainable wind farm and to support communities and this partnership does both.”
